Bikram
Sambat - Official Calendar of Nepal
Bikram Sambat (B.S.),
the official calendar of Nepal, is based
on ancient Hindu tradition. Bikram Sambat
has 56.7 years more than the A D year (ie.
2003 A.D would be 2059-2060 B.S). The Bikram
Sambat starts with first day of month Baisakh
(the Chaitra Purnima). It usually falls
around April 14.
The new year is celebrated in Nepal as any
other new year in other part of the world
marked by parties, family gathering and
exchanging wishes.
Beside Nepal, this calendar is extensively
followed in the Northern India. Bengalis
celebrate also clebrate this as their new
year. In Bangladesh, it is celebrated as
'Poila Baisakh' as a national holiday.
